Along the coast to the historical city of Tavira

Come and discover the wetland ecosystem, the coastal stretch of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the historical town of Tavira.

After a short trip by vehicle*, we cross the Ria Formosa wetlands on a small train that takes us as far as Praia do Barril beach. Here, we start out on a 6 km walk along the beach. The Ilha de Tavira island is home to frequently spotted birds. On arrival at Quatro Águas, where we may view a former tuna fishing village, we cross back over the lagoon, this time by boat.

We continue on foot as far as the city of Tavira, passing alongside the salt works and another good site for spotting birds including black-winged stilts, flamingos, spoonbills, little stints, grey plovers and large terns.

Following lunch in a Tavira restaurant, we set off in discovery of this city with its seven Phoenician wells, the Roman bridge over the Gilão River, its medieval walls and castle alongside 37 churches. This walk tells of the history of the Eastern Algarve but is also the chance to try some of the characteristic local sweets and cakes such as Bolo Mimoso de Tavira, Folhados de Tavira pastries or the fig cakes and jams.
