Along the Ria Formosa lagoon, from Cabanas to Cacela Velha

Setting off from Golden Club on foot, we follow the lagoon boardwalk until its end in the village of Cabanas, where the 17th century São João da Barra Fortress overlooks the fishing vessels anchored offshore and the Ilha de Cabanas island.

From there, we continue with our hike over the sand flanked by reeds, marshes and dunes, between the reddish cliff and the lagoon, through the Ria Formosa Natural Park. On this stretch, we frequently encounter white herons, storks and coastal dwelling birds.

In Alacém, we cross a small stream on foot with water running below our knees (or cleared by a small leap).

On arrival in Cacela Velha, a small white village perched on a promontory with a 17th century fortress, church and residences in the traditional Algarve style, we may enjoy the superb views out over the Ria Formosa lagoon, the island-barrier and the sea beyond.

We have lunch in a Cacela Velha restaurant and later return by vehicle* to the hotel.
