From the mountains to the Guadiana River

In the morning, we travel by vehicle* to the hinterland region of Odeleite, in the council of Castro Marim. From there, we set off walking down the final slopes of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains in the direction of Rio Guadiana. Along the route, we encounter local plants such as juniper, oleander, tamarisk, myrsine, rosemary and lavender.

Continuing downwards, there appears the Guadiana River, separating Portugal and Spain, flanked by stretches of reeds and farmed fields, pastures, olive and orange groves - a range of tones in ochre, yellow, green and blue. The path leads onwards along the bank of the river. Occasionally we spot common and green sandpipers, ospreys (only in winter), redshanks, cormorants and other birds.

On arriving in a small hamlet with views out over the Guadiana, we travel onwards by vehicle to a local restaurant to taste some of the specialities of this region.

After lunch, we stop off at the Castro Marim Castle to enjoy some more of this region’s history and contemplate another set of fine views. We then make our return to Cabanas/Tavira by vehicle.
